The United States and Serbia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on energy infrastructure and regional energy security during the launch of their first bilateral Strategic Dialogue in Washington DC. The agreement reinforces cooperation on critical energy infrastructure, gas connectivity and long-term energy resilience while supporting Serbia's efforts to strengthen its energy independence.
As part of the agreement, the United States welcomed Serbia's preliminary decision to move forward with the Đerdap 3 (Iron Gate 3) pumped-storage hydropower project. The project is the first initiative identified under the two countries' 2024 intergovernmental energy agreement and is expected to play a key role in strengthening regional electricity infrastructure and grid flexibility.
Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić stated that the MoU also includes the development of new gas interconnectors, aiming to improve Serbia's energy security through greater regional integration and more diversified gas supply routes.
The agreement forms part of a broader strategic framework covering energy, foreign policy, security, trade, investment, science and advanced technologies.
Alongside the energy agreement, both governments announced additional initiatives, including US financial support for Serbia's 5G rollout, Serbia's participation in the Artemis Accords for peaceful space cooperation, and an expanded Fulbright academic exchange programme.
These initiatives reflect a broader effort to deepen economic, technological and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement signals growing international support for Serbia's long-term energy transition and infrastructure modernisation. Expanding pumped-storage capacity and regional gas interconnections can improve energy security, increase system flexibility and strengthen cross-border energy integration across Southeast Europe. For investors and energy developers, the partnership also demonstrates continued international backing for strategic energy infrastructure projects in the Western Balkans.
