Türkiye continues to strengthen its gas supply by adding a second FSRU at the Dörtyol terminal and planning a new Mediterranean facility to improve flexibility during peak winter demand.

Expanding capacity at Dörtyol

The Ertuğrul Gazi FSRU plays a central role in the country’s gas supply system, providing around 28 million cubic meters per day, enough to meet the needs of 17 provinces. The additional unit is expected to raise the terminal’s total capacity to 56 million cubic meters per day, significantly improving Türkiye’s ability to cover peak seasonal demand.

New facility on the Mediterranean coast

In addition to the Dörtyol project, Türkiye is planning a new FSRU facility between Gazipaşa and Anamur on the Mediterranean coast. The project aims to diversify supply sources and strengthen energy infrastructure in coastal regions.
Together, these projects are expected to increase the country’s daily regasification capacity to around 200 million cubic meters within the next two years, enabling Türkiye to meet more than half of its gas demand through LNG imports.

A step toward a regional gas hub

These initiatives form part of a broader strategy to expand LNG infrastructure, increase domestic production, strengthen pipeline imports, and expand storage capacity. Through these measures, Türkiye aims to enhance system flexibility and position itself as a regional gas trading hub.

Minister’s remarks and regional implications

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar noted that the number of FSRUs available for charter globally is limited, making early planning for new projects a strategic necessity to secure supply. He added that the cost of building a new unit can reach approximately $350 million, underlining the scale of investment required in such critical infrastructure, and indicated that Türkiye may in the future lease part of its FSRU capacity to other countries as it strengthens its role as a regional gas hub.

These developments highlight the growing importance of regional coordination, as LNG and gas infrastructure investments accelerate across Southeast Europe and reshape supply dynamics in the years ahead.
