Saipem, a leading global engineering and construction services provider, has secured a significant contract to expand its supervision and subsea intervention services on the GreenStream pipeline, which transports gas from Libya to Italy. Originally installed by Saipem in 2002, the GreenStream pipeline is a critical infrastructure component in the Mediterranean energy landscape.
The GreenStream pipeline stretches 520 kilometers, featuring a 32-inch diameter that links Mellitah on the Libyan coast with Gela in Sicily, traversing water depths of up to 1127 meters. Capable of transporting up to 11 billion cubic meters of gas per annum, the pipeline is jointly owned by GreenStream BV, a 50:50 joint venture between Italy's Eni and Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC).
Since 2008, Saipem has been responsible for various services for GreenStream, including asset integrity, inspection, maintenance, and emergency pipeline services. The new contract significantly expands Saipem's scope of work to address a broader range of scenarios and customer needs.
Sonsub, Saipem’s center of excellence for robotics, underwater technologies, and services, will manage these activities, coordinated with the Saipem engineering hub in Fano, Italy. This expanded work aims to streamline the integrated management of survey data and critical spares, provide specialized engineering services related to asset integrity, and ensure readiness for repair interventions in a wide range of damage scenarios.
A key component of this contract includes the use of SiRCoS, a remotely operated repair system developed by Sonsub, capable of operating in water depths up to 2200 meters. This technology will be crucial for executing repair interventions, enhancing the pipeline's operational reliability.
The new contract consolidates the long-term cooperation between Saipem and GreenStream. In 2002, Saipem was awarded the initial contract for the pipeline's construction, achieving a record for the deepest pipelaying with anchors at the time.
This award reinforces Saipem's position as a leader in the field of subsea engineering and pipeline maintenance, demonstrating its capability to manage complex offshore projects and ensure the integrity of critical energy infrastructure.
