Petronas, ADNOC, & Storegga: A Global Trio Tackling CO2

When Malaysia’s Petronas, UAE’s ADNOC, and UK-based Storegga join forces, they raise the bar for everyone. These countries share a deep history of energy leadership—Malaysia, known for its pioneering work in the oil and gas sector, and the UAE, a global leader in petroleum production, are now shifting their gaze to a greener future. Petronas, ADNOC, and Storegga have signed a joint study and development agreement (JSDA) to evaluate the carbon storage capabilities of saline aquifers in Malaysia’s Penyu Basin. Together, they plan to capture and store 5 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030.

Why Penyu Basin?

Located off the coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the Penyu Basin isn’t just a picturesque marine setting—it’s a natural carbon storage solution. Beneath its waters lie saline aquifers, which are deep rock formations filled with saltwater, perfect for locking away carbon emissions. The trio's goal is to store millions of tonnes of CO2 in these underground reservoirs, reducing the carbon impact on our atmosphere.

AI-Powered CCS

And there’s a hint of the future of CCS there, too. The collaboration goes beyond conventional carbon capture. These energy giants are leveraging AI and advanced technology to boost the storage capacity of these aquifers. AI will help simulate the movement of CO2, monitor containment, and improve the efficiency of the project. This is about making carbon storage smarter, safer, and scalable.

5 Million Tonnes by 2030

The commitment is clear: 5 million tonnes of CO2 every year—that’s the equivalent of taking more than 1 million cars off the road annually. The partnership also signifies Malaysia’s ambition of being a regional hub for CCS, ready to lead the entire Asia Pacific region in carbon reduction.

A Step Towards Decarbonization

So, why are these global leaders investing in CCS? The answer lies in their shared vision to reduce Southeast Asia's carbon footprint. Could this be part of the solution to the region’s decarbonization challenge? It’s certainly a bold and vital step forward.
