Mubadala Energy, the operator based in the United Arab Emirates, has recently announced a significant gas discovery off the coast of North Sumatra in Indonesia. The discovery was made at the Tangkulo-1 well, where the company estimates it has accessed approximately 2 trillion cubic feet of gas. This discovery builds on the success of its previous find at Layaran-1 and solidifies its position as a prominent player in the industry.

The exploration at Tangkulo-1 reached a depth of 3,400 meters, with the drill extending 1,200 meters below the sea surface. The operation uncovered a substantial 80-meter gas column within high-quality Oligocene sandstone. Initial flow tests yielded impressive results, with outputs of 47 million cubic feet of gas and 1,300 barrels of condensate per day. These findings indicate that potential production rates could reach between 80 to 100 million cubic feet of gas and over 2,000 barrels of condensate daily.

This landmark discovery not only transforms Indonesia’s energy profile but also underscores the country's strategic importance as a top energy hub. Mansoor Mohammed Al Hamed, CEO of Mubadala, described the discovery as crucial, stating it could significantly impact the region’s energy landscape.

Mubadala is positioned to expand its operations and continue exploring this area, driven by a strategy that prioritises gas. Their commitment to technological innovation and strategic partnerships aligns with regional development objectives and the broader agenda of transitioning to sustainable energy sources.
