The National Oil Corporation (NOC) headquarters in Tripoli recently hosted a pivotal meeting with the executive team of the “Planting 100 Million Trees” project, confirming the initiative's implementation is set to begin in April. This project forms a cornerstone of the ambitious “Green Libya” program, spearheaded by His Excellency Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, to combat desertification, enhance vegetation, and tackle climate change across the country.
Launched in December, the “Green Libya” initiative aims to plant 100 million trees, symbolizing a transformative step towards environmental sustainability in Libya. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the project’s executive team leader, NOC’s Sustainable Development and Media managers, the Chairman of the Public Services Company, and representatives from supporting international energy companies such as Total, Equinor, Eni, Repsol, Suncor, Gazprom, Wintershall, Tatneft, BP, and OMV.
Discussions during the meeting focused on setting clear objectives for the project, identifying target areas for tree planting, and organizing the logistical framework required for successful execution. The role of supporting companies in providing resources and expertise to ensure the project's success was also a major focus.
Participants underscored the significance of the “Green Libya” initiative as a bold step toward addressing climate change challenges and improving the local environment. The project reflects a shared commitment between the Libyan government, the NOC, and its international partners to drive sustainable development and environmental resilience in Libya.
With the confirmed start in April, the initiative marks a new era of collaboration and environmental action, aligning Libya’s efforts with global sustainability goals.
