The Fénix project, a collaborative endeavor between French energy giant TotalEnergies, German-based Wintershall Dea, and Pan American Energy (PAE), has successfully installed a gas platform 60 kilometers off the coast in the southern Argentine Sea. The completion of this platform marks a crucial phase in the project, with TotalEnergies holding a 37.5% stake and the operational lead, mirrored by Wintershall Dea’s stake, and PAE controlling 25%.
With a towering investment of $700 million, this project is set to be the largest energy investment in Argentina. The offshore gas development in the Austral Basin is anticipated to commence operations this November, following the installation of a 4,800-tonne platform in waters 70 meters deep. The final setup involved the placement of a 1,500-tonne deck, transported from Rosetti Marino's shipyard in Italy to Tierra del Fuego.
Before it becomes fully operational, the project will undergo several critical steps. The next immediate phase includes the final connection of an underwater pipeline linking Fénix with the Vega Pléyade field, operated by TotalEnergies. The completion of this pipeline is expected before mid-year, followed by the drilling of three production wells starting in November, marking the third and final stage of the project.
The Fénix project is projected to supply up to 10 million cubic meters of gas per day, catering to the domestic demand and significantly reducing the need for LNG imports during the winter months. This venture is not only a leap towards energy self-sufficiency but also aligns with sustainable practices, aiming for one of the lowest carbon footprints per cubic meter of gas produced.
As Argentina positions itself as a leader in sustainable energy production, the Fénix project stands out as a beacon of innovation and environmental stewardship. With its potential to impact the energy landscape for over 15 years, Fénix is set to be a cornerstone in Argentina's journey towards a more sustainable and energy-independent future.
