ExxonMobil, in collaboration with Azule Energy, Equinor, and Sonangol, has successfully discovered oil in the Likembe-01 exploration well offshore Angola, as announced by Angola’s National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG). This significant finding occurred in the Kizomba B development area within Block 15. Drilling operations were conducted from February to April 2024 in water depths of approximately 1,200 metres, reaching a total depth of 3,013 metres.
The Likembe-01 well encountered promising reservoirs of Miocene age. ExxonMobil reported identifying potentially high-quality sand packages containing both oil and gas. This discovery marks the first exploration effort since the Angolan government pledged to enhance investment in its oil and gas sector. This initiative, called the “Incremental Production” project by ANPG, aims to promote production levels.
The successful discovery at Likembe-01 highlights the potential of Angola's offshore resources and signals a positive step towards achieving the country's ambitious energy sector goals. The collaborative effort by the involved companies reflects a strengthened commitment to exploring and developing Angola’s hydrocarbon potential.
