Timor-Leste’s President, José Ramos-Horta, has announced that the $74 billion Greater Sunrise gas project could begin within months, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s energy sector. With decades of planning and negotiations now close to fruition, the project awaits only the signing of a treaty with Australia.
Ramos-Horta expressed optimism that the project would soon move forward, emphasizing the potential for rapid development. “If we secure the commitment, I believe a decision will be made by the end of this year,” he said, projecting confidence in a successful outcome.
The president highlighted the economic benefits for Timor-Leste, noting that the construction phase alone would create thousands of jobs and generate hundreds of millions of dollars for the economy. He underscored the importance of processing the gas in Timor-Leste, which he believes would maximize the project’s positive impact on local communities.
Ramos-Horta praised the proximity of the gas field to Timor-Leste as a unique advantage. “It’s much closer to Timor-Leste,” he stated, emphasizing the cost-efficiency of processing the gas domestically rather than in Australia. He noted that local processing would be significantly more economical, benefiting the nation's growth and development.
As the project progresses, Ramos-Horta remains confident that Timor-Leste is poised to become a key player in the region’s energy landscape, highlighting the country's readiness and commitment to make the most of the opportunity.
