Abu Dhabi, UAE – The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has announced the commencement of crude oil production at the Belbazem offshore block, marking a significant milestone in meeting the increasing demand for Abu Dhabi’s low-carbon intensity oil and gas. Operated by Al Yasat Petroleum, a collaborative venture between ADNOC and the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), this initiative underscores a forward-looking approach to energy production.
Located 120 kilometers northwest of Abu Dhabi, the Belbazem Block is distinguished by its three offshore fields: Belbazem, Umm Al Salsal, and Umm Al Dholou. This project is set to boost production capacity substantially, aiming to achieve 45,000 barrels per day (bpd) of light crude oil and 27 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of associated gas. This increase is a crucial step towards ADNOC’s ambitious goal of reaching a production capacity of 5 million bpd by 2027, while simultaneously promoting gas self-sufficiency within the UAE.
The venture emphasizes innovation and environmental stewardship, employing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalization to improve efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. The introduction of the WellInsight AI tool, developed by AIQ, plays a pivotal role in analyzing reservoir data and enhancing operational safety and performance. Additionally, by integrating technologies from the Bu Haseer offshore field and leveraging the facilities of the Satah Al Razboot (SARB) field, Belbazem achieves operational synergies that result in cost savings and a minimized carbon footprint.
Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, ADNOC’s Upstream Executive Director, highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “The start of crude oil production from the Belbazem offshore block is testament to the success of our strategic partnership with CNPC and the robust bilateral energy relationship between the UAE and China. ADNOC continues to maximize value from Abu Dhabi’s resources, while reducing our carbon footprint to ensure a secure, reliable, and responsible supply of energy to customers locally and internationally.”
The development of the Belbazem block is part of ADNOC’s broader strategy to enhance its production capabilities and sustainability measures. The National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) secured a contract in 2021 for the full field development of the offshore block, underscoring the project’s scale and ambition.
This initiative not only represents a significant stride towards energy self-sufficiency and sustainability for the UAE but also reinforces the strong bilateral ties between the UAE and China in the energy sector. As production ramps up, the Belbazem block is poised to be a cornerstone in ADNOC’s efforts to meet global energy demands with a reduced environmental impact.
